Here is what has moved across UK engineering and construction over the past few days — and what each development means for engineering recruitment and vacancies across the country.
Construction PMI rebounds, but the sector stays in contraction
The S&P Global UK Construction PMI rose to 44.7 in July from 38.4 in June, its highest reading since March, although it remains well below the 50.0 no-change threshold. Housebuilding fell at its slowest pace in nine months, and survey respondents pointed to a rebound in client demand as the main driver. PBC Today has the detail.
Hiring angle: A stabilising order book usually precedes a return to hiring by roughly one to two quarters, so consultancies and contractors that held their nerve on headcount are now best placed to win work. Employers considering engineering vacancies in the autumn should begin the search now rather than compete for the same shortlist in October.
New cladding funding opens 17 August — expect fire engineer vacancies to follow
The government has extended the Cladding Safety Scheme, administered by Homes England, to eligible multi-occupied residential buildings under 11 metres in England. Applications open on 17 August 2026 and close on 9 October 2026, and must be supported by a PAS 9980:2022 Fire Risk Appraisal of External Walls, with high life-critical risk buildings prioritised. Hiring angle: An eight-week application window backed by mandatory FRAEW assessments will create immediate demand for qualified assessors, and we expect a sharp rise in fire engineer vacancies and façade engineer jobs through the autumn. Firms without in-house PAS 9980 capability should be talking to a specialist recruitment agency before the window opens.
Insolvencies remain the sector’s dominant risk
The Insolvency Service recorded 3,805 construction company insolvencies in the 12 months to June 2026, keeping construction ahead of every other sector by volume. Recent casualties include Ardmore Construction Group, which entered administration on 11 June 2026, and Agetur (UK), which collapsed on 1 June owing creditors close to £3.6m. Hiring angle: Every administration releases experienced people into the market at short notice, and firms with live engineering jobs in the UK can move quickly on candidates who would not otherwise be available. Counterparty checks are now a routine part of candidate decision-making, so employers should expect questions about pipeline and financial stability at interview.
Infrastructure and utilities starts lift civil engineering vacancies
Against a flat wider market, Glenigan data shows infrastructure project starts up 24% and utilities up 51%, including the £74m Culham River Crossing in Oxfordshire and a £68m flood protection scheme in Dumfries. Hiring angle: Bridges, flood alleviation and water framework work are absorbing candidates who might otherwise be sitting in buildings-side roles, which is tightening the market for civil engineering vacancies in the South and South West. Consultancy consolidation continues
Ethos Engineering announced its acquisition of UK consultancy 3DEC Ltd on 3 August 2026, the latest in a steady run of buy-outs that has also seen Cowi acquire Punch Consulting Engineers in June and Savills add MEIT Consultants in April. Business Post reported the deal.
Hiring angle: Post-acquisition integration reliably produces candidate movement at senior associate and director level as reporting lines change, and this is when discreet headhunting works best. It is also the moment to review retention for your own technical leads.
