Senior Structural Revit Technician — Epsom

CAD & BIM

£50,000 - £60,000

Substation structures and foundations for the in-house design team of a national infrastructure group. Hybrid working, parking on site, discretionary bonus.

JustEng is recruiting a Senior Structural Revit Technician for the in-house engineering design team of a national infrastructure group, based at their Epsom office. The team designs the structures, foundations and civils that sit underneath energy infrastructure — substations above all — and the group then builds them, so the models you produce are constructed by colleagues rather than handed to a stranger.

This is a senior seat. You would be one of the people the drawings go through rather than one of the people they go to, and the salary reflects that: £50,000–£60,000 sits at the top of the national band for structural Revit technicians, which in the South East is where it needs to be to attract someone who can genuinely take a package to issue.

What you would actually be modelling

Substation structures and foundations are a specific discipline, and one that rewards a technician who likes precision. The recurring work is:

  • Reinforced concrete foundations — pad and piled foundations, pile caps, ground beams and equipment plinths, sized around loads that come from electrical plant rather than from buildings
  • Transformer plinths, including rail arrangements where the transformer needs to be moved for maintenance
  • Oil containment — bund walls, interceptors and sumps, with capacity arguments that have to account for the plant volume, rainwater and firewater
  • Fire and blast walls between transformer bays
  • Cable trenches, troughs, duct banks and removable cover slabs, plus the cable entry sealing details
  • Steelwork — gantries, busbar and equipment support structures, cable ladder supports, access platforms, stairs and handrails
  • Holding-down bolt arrangements and setting-out, where bolt positions have to agree across several foundations for the steel to go together at all
  • Control building substructure, kiosk and GRP enclosure bases, hardstanding, drainage and site levels
  • Earthing interfaces, coordinated so the earthing installation and the concrete pour do not fight each other

The role

  • Model and detail reinforced concrete and structural steelwork in Revit, producing coordinated GA drawings, sections, details, reinforcement drawings and bar bending schedules to BS 8666
  • Work alongside the structural engineers, turning calculations, sketches and mark-ups into complete, checked drawing packages
  • Coordinate the structural model against electrical primary and secondary layouts — clash detection and resolution, and the interface management that substation work lives or dies on
  • Check and mark up other technicians’ drawings, and take responsibility for what leaves the office
  • Maintain and improve the Revit template, families and standards, so that substation components are built once and reused rather than re-drawn on every job
  • Work to ISO 19650 information-management principles across a live project load
  • Support the construction teams with buildability queries, revisions and as-built information during delivery
  • Apply CDM 2015 designer duties in the detailing — buildability, maintenance access and safe construction sequence
  • Mentor less experienced technicians as the team grows

About you

  • Strong, current Revit experience on structures — both reinforced concrete detailing and structural steelwork
  • A background in substations, energy infrastructure or heavy civils is ideal. Water industry, highways, industrial or other RC-heavy structural detailing translates well, and the substation-specific knowledge can be taught to the right technician
  • Confident reinforcement detailing and bar bending schedules to BS 8666
  • Comfortable with UK detailing conventions, drawing standards and construction information
  • AutoCAD alongside Revit; Navisworks or equivalent for coordination
  • ISO 19650 / BIM information-management awareness
  • HNC, HND or degree in civil or structural engineering, or equivalent experience — time served counts here
  • The seniority to check work, hold a standard and be trusted with a package, not just produce drawings
  • A full UK driving licence is useful for occasional site visits
  • Eligibility to work in the UK

What’s on offer

  • £50,000 – £60,000 depending on experience
  • Hybrid working — 3 days in the Epsom office, 2 from home
  • Parking on site
  • Discretionary annual bonus, indicatively around 5%
  • A design team inside the business that builds the work, so you see your models constructed
  • A sector with a long, funded pipeline rather than a project-by-project workload
  • Genuine technical ownership — this is a senior seat, not a production one

Why energy infrastructure, and why now

If you are weighing this against a consultancy or a buildings role, the case is about workload security and the kind of work it produces.

  • Grid investment is committed rather than hoped for. Ofgem published its RIIO-3 final determinations on 4 December 2025, covering the price control period from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2031, and approved £28.1 billion of upfront investment across electricity transmission, gas transmission and gas distribution, with a substantially larger pipeline capable of being deployed across the period
  • Substations are the physical bottleneck in that programme. New connections, reinforcements, battery storage, solar and EV infrastructure all terminate in a substation, and every one of them needs foundations, containment, trenches and steelwork detailed
  • The work is repeat-pattern but never identical — you build genuine depth in a specialism instead of starting from zero on every project
  • Structural technicians who know substation detailing are in short supply, and that scarcity is what puts this role at the top of the salary band
