One role, open to either level. A North London practice that puts architectural design, structural engineering, Building Regulations and party wall work under one roof is looking for an Architectural Assistant to grow into a properly rounded designer.
If you are a Part I wanting a year that teaches you something, or a Part II who would rather be trusted with a whole project than one detail of somebody else scheme, read on.
What makes this different
Plenty of assistants spend two years on a single package of a single large scheme and never see it built. Here the projects are smaller, faster and finished. You will take drawings from a first sketch through planning and Building Regulations to a set a builder actually works from, and then watch that work happen on site. You will pick up the technical craft that makes architects employable: how a wall meets a floor, what Building Control will accept, and how a beam gets sized by the engineer at the next desk.
What you will be doing
- Producing architectural drawings in AutoCAD — plans, sections, elevations and construction details
- Helping put together planning and Building Regulations submissions
- Developing design ideas from feasibility sketches into workable drawings
- Building up technical drawing packages under the supervision of the senior architectural team
- Working alongside in-house structural engineers and taking their information into your drawings
- Carrying out site measurements and existing-condition surveys
- Researching planning policy, Building Regulations requirements and product specifications
- Attending site visits and design meetings, and seeing how the drawings translate into building
- Supporting the wider team across residential, commercial and mixed-use projects
The projects
Residential-led and varied — extensions and refurbishments, loft conversions, HMO conversions and internal reconfigurations, structural alterations, plus commercial properties, mixed-use schemes and new-build.
What we are looking for
- Part I or Part II level: an accredited architecture degree (RIBA Part I), or a Part II qualification for the senior end of the band
- Working AutoCAD ability — this practice draws in AutoCAD and you will be using it every day
- A portfolio that shows how you think, not only how you render
- Genuine interest in the technical side: construction, detailing and Building Regulations
- Care with drawings — correct, consistent and properly annotated
- Willingness to ask questions, take feedback and work at pace on live projects
- Right to work in the UK
Helpful, not essential
- UK practice experience, including a year out or placement
- Exposure to residential extensions, lofts or conversions
- Any experience of Building Regulations drawings
- SketchUp, Revit, Adobe CS or hand-drawing alongside AutoCAD
- Site visit experience
Level and salary
£26,000 – £40,000, set by level and experience. The lower part of the band is aimed at Part I level, the upper part at Part II with practice experience behind it. Tell us which you are when you apply and we will be straight with you about where you would sit.
