Senior Engineer – Forensic Technical Services (MEP / Building Services)

Forensic Engineering

Our client is a highly respected international consultancy specialising in forensic engineering, risk advisory, dispute resolution and expert witness services. They are growing their Forensic Technical Services (FTS) team, with offices across the UK and hybrid working.

Location: UK-wide (offices across the UK) – Hybrid
Salary: £60,000–£90,000 DOE + car allowance + bonus + excellent benefits

This is a genuine career move for an experienced MEP / Building Services Engineer ready to step beyond traditional project delivery and into forensic investigation, disputes and expert witness work — supported throughout with mentoring, specialist training and exposure to live forensic commissions alongside established experts.

The opportunity

Rather than designing the next project, you would be investigating what happened on existing ones — MEP system failures, defects, design responsibility, commissioning issues, performance problems and technical disputes. You will review drawings, specifications, calculations and project records, carry out technical investigations and help prepare evidence-based reports used in litigation, arbitration and insurance claims.

What they are looking for

  • Strong MEP / building services design and delivery experience
  • Ideally Chartered or progressing towards Chartership with CIBSE, IMechE, IET or equivalent
  • Strong technical and analytical ability
  • Experience across design, commissioning, operations or technical investigations
  • Excellent written communication and report-writing skills
  • A methodical approach and strong technical judgement

No previous forensic or expert witness experience is required — the firm specifically supports experienced building services engineers making the transition.

Package & benefits

  • £60,000–£90,000 DOE + car allowance + bonus + excellent benefits
  • Discretionary annual bonus (historically around 10%)
  • Up to £10,000 per year professional development / training budget
  • 25 days’ annual leave plus public holidays
  • Life insurance at 4x salary; critical illness cover up to 75% of salary
  • 4% employer pension contribution
  • 37.5-hour week with flexible core hours; hybrid / remote flexibility

Why forensic engineering?

It is a relatively under-the-radar career path for experienced MEP engineers, but one with excellent long-term progression — from Senior Engineer through Associate / Associate Director and ultimately into senior expert work. It also offers greater career resilience than traditional project delivery, since demand is driven by engineering failures, insurance claims, construction disputes and litigation rather than solely by new construction. Once trained on the legal and expert-witness side and appointed in your own right, six-figure earnings are the norm for established experts.
