Construction PMI rebound points to steadier engineering vacancies
The S&P Global UK Construction PMI rose to 44.7 in July from 38.4 in June — its highest reading since March, though still below the 50.0 no-change mark. All three sub-sectors recorded slower declines, with commercial work most resilient, housebuilding contracting at its slowest pace since October 2025 and civil engineering remaining the weakest segment at 38.3. Employment fell again but at the slowest rate since February, and around 38% of firms now expect activity to rise over the next year (The Intermediary).

Cladding Safety Scheme opens to buildings under 11 metres
The government has confirmed new targeted funding for eligible multi-occupied residential buildings under 11 metres in England, delivered through the Cladding Safety Scheme by Homes England. Applications open on 17 August 2026 and close after an eight-week window on 9 October 2026. Eligibility rests on a Fire Risk Appraisal of External Walls completed to PAS 9980:2022 by a suitably qualified professional, with funding prioritised by life-critical fire risk (GOV.UK).

Keller reports record half year and £1.9bn order book
Geotechnical specialist Keller Group reported interim results for the half year to 30 June 2026, with revenue up 11.1% on a constant currency basis to £1,608m and underlying operating profit up 17.1% to £117.9m, giving a 7.3% operating margin. The order book reached a record £1.9bn, lifted by North American data-centre foundations and a multi-year highway remediation contract, and the interim dividend rose 57% to 28.7p (Keller Group).

Materials demand stays weak as concrete and mortar sales slide
Demand for the key materials used to build new homes weakened further in the first half of 2026. Ready-mixed concrete sales volumes fell 9.3% against the same period last year and mortar sales declined 5.1%, extending the sector’s downturn towards a fifth consecutive year (Aggregates Business).
Hiring angle: Materials volumes are a leading indicator for residential design workload, so consultancies weighted towards housing should plan hiring conservatively and lean on contract engineers rather than permanent headcount until order intake firms up.
Insolvency pressure still biting in civils
Newly filed administration documents for Northamptonshire civil engineering contractor Agetur (UK), which entered administration on 1 June 2026, show creditors owed almost £3.6m and 81 people employed at the point of collapse. Stoke-on-Trent groundworks and civils contractor Caldwell Construction also remains in administration, with administrators pointing to rising costs, programme delays and wider market uncertainty (TheBusinessDesk).
