£70,000 - £120,000

A leading international forensic engineering consultancy is looking
for an experienced Gas Engineer or Gas Technical Specialist who is
interested in taking their career in a new direction. The salary is
£70,000 to £120,000 depending on experience, with a strong benefits
package and the flexibility to be based anywhere in the UK.
What is forensic engineering?
Forensic engineering is about investigating why engineering systems
fail, what went wrong and what caused an incident. When a gas explosion,
fire, carbon monoxide incident or major equipment failure happens,
forensic engineers are appointed by insurers, solicitors, businesses and
other organisations to investigate.
Rather than designing, installing or maintaining systems, you’d use
your engineering knowledge to examine technical evidence, establish the
probable cause and give independent expert opinions. Your findings may
form part of insurance claims, construction disputes, litigation or
other legal proceedings.
You don’t need previous forensic engineering experience. The
consultancy provides specialist training and support to help experienced
engineers develop the investigative, reporting and expert witness skills
required.
Why move into forensic engineering?
- A highly specialised career with long term prospects, where decades
of technical experience become an advantage rather than a barrier - The chance to become a recognised technical expert, taking on
increasingly complex and high value investigations - Progression into Principal, Associate, Director and senior expert
positions as your expertise and reputation grow
What you’d be investigating
- Gas related fires, explosions and carbon monoxide incidents
- Failures involving commercial and industrial gas installations
- Gas appliances, industrial burners and combustion systems
- Gas fired boilers, heating plant and associated equipment
- Gas leaks, pressure regulation and safety system failures
- Equipment defects, installation issues and operational failures
- Investigations across the UK and potentially internationally
You’d carry out site investigations, examine technical evidence,
analyse potential causes and prepare independent technical reports, with
the opportunity to develop towards acting as an expert witness.
What they’re looking for
- Extensive gas engineering experience, ideally 15 years or more
- Strong commercial or industrial gas utilisation experience, rather
than a background focused only on transmission or distribution
networks - Hands on knowledge of gas fired equipment, combustion systems,
burners, boilers, gas appliances or related installations - Experience in commissioning, servicing, troubleshooting, fault
diagnosis or resolving complex engineering problems - Technical management, engineering leadership or senior specialist
experience, ideally developed after a practical engineering career - A relevant degree, preferably Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or
a closely related discipline - Chartered Engineer status, or progress towards it, would be
particularly attractive - Good knowledge of gas safety legislation, standards and codes of
practice - Strong analytical, report writing and communication skills
The consultancy is also open to highly experienced technical
specialists whose backgrounds don’t match every preferred point.
Previous forensic, incident investigation or expert witness experience
is not required, and full training will be provided.
What’s on offer
- £70,000 to £120,000, depending on experience
- Senior, Principal or Associate level, depending on experience
- Based anywhere in the UK
- Company car
- Private medical insurance
- Contributory pension
- Life assurance and permanent health insurance
- Five weeks’ annual leave
- Specialist forensic training and professional development
How to apply
If your background includes substantial commercial or industrial gas
utilisation experience, please submit your CV for a
confidential conversation. If your experience is mainly in another part
of the gas industry, please still get in touch and we can talk through
whether it transfers.
