Electrical Design Engineer — stepping into the UK lead role, directing a large design team in South Africa from London.

JustEng is recruiting an Electrical Design Engineer for the London studio of an established international building services consulting engineering practice. The practice has a large, long-standing engineering base in South Africa — where it designs major data centre and healthcare projects — and a young, fast-growing London office that is winning more work than it currently has the people to deliver.

This is not a seat on a big team. It is one of the first senior technical hires into a London studio that is scaling, and it is mapped to become the electrical discipline lead for the UK. Day to day, that means designing from London and directing a large, experienced engineering team in South Africa to deliver it.

What makes this role different

• You will not only design. You will direct. A significant part of the delivery is produced by an experienced offshore team of engineers and technicians — several of them more senior than you — and your job is to brief them, review what comes back, and own the outcome in front of the client. That is a rare thing to be handed at four to ten years in.
• The London workload is real and growing. The studio is turning work away rather than chasing it. The constraint is delivery capacity, not pipeline.
• The progression is structural, not aspirational. UK electrical discipline lead, multiple projects, your own delegation model — the business is organised for growth and this seat sits directly under it.
• London residential, with heavyweight engineering behind you. The UK work is predominantly residential; the wider practice designs large data centres and healthcare facilities, so the technical depth to draw on goes far beyond what a small studio would normally have.
• A properly organised business. Documented processes, a real quality system, and a hybrid pattern that is fixed and predictable rather than negotiated project by project.

The role

Electrical building services design on London residential schemes — concept through detailed design to site support — while directing the wider delivery team on production. Across a typical project you would expect to cover:

• Load assessment, diversity and demand strategy; DNO liaison, incoming supply and substation requirements
• LV distribution design — rising mains and busbar, sub-mains, landlord and tenant metering strategy, distribution boards and final circuits
• Riser design, containment strategy and coordination through the building
• Internal, external and emergency lighting design and calculations
• Fire detection and alarm design including BS 5839-6, plus life-safety systems, AOVs and smoke control interfaces
• Standby power, life-safety supplies and resilience strategy
• Lightning protection, earthing and surge protection
• Low carbon and compliance — photovoltaics, EV charging infrastructure, heat pump electrical loads, Part L and SAP interfaces, London Plan and GLA energy requirements
• Security, access control, data and communal systems, and containment for them
• Building Safety Act duties on higher-risk residential buildings — golden thread information and gateway submissions
• Specifications, schedules, tender documentation, submittal review, site inspection and support to handover

And running through all of it: writing the brief for the offshore delivery team, setting the standard, checking their output, and being the person the client and design team actually deal with.

What we are looking for

• Four to ten years in electrical building services design, gained in a consultancy (a strong design-side contractor background you are ready to bring consultancy-side will be considered)
• The ability to take a scheme from concept through detailed design and stand behind it — not to produce what someone else has already specified
• UK residential experience is ideal; other UK building services sectors are welcome if the fundamentals are strong
• Working knowledge of BS 7671, BS 5266, BS 5839, CIBSE guidance, and Part L and Part B as they apply to electrical services
• Revit MEP and the Autodesk stack, plus electrical calculation and lighting packages (Amtech / Trimble ProDesign, Dialux or Relux or similar)
• A degree, HND or equivalent in electrical or building services engineering — or demonstrable experience that stands in its place
• IEng or CEng through CIBSE or IET, or a clear route towards it, is welcomed and supported
• Real character. The role is client-facing from the start and involves directing experienced people you do not sit next to. Technical ability alone will not carry it
• Right to work in the UK
